GeoAid
In 1995, Geovic Mining formed Geovic Cameroon and acquired the exclusive mineral rights to the cobalt and nickel deposits in the East Province. Spearheaded by Geovic’s founder Bill Buckovic (currently Executive Vice President, Exploration), Geovic not only commenced exploration activities, but also a dedicated socio-humanitarian effort.
A geologist with a minor in anthropology, Bill understood from the onset the necessity of having broad community support in all phases of the project. Bill put his money where his mouth was by improving the water supply in the Kongo village and building a school well before he was awarded the mining convention.
Bill conceived the idea of GeoAid, and in 1998 brought Dr. Pat Huff on board to lead the effort. Pat had worked in Latin America on a number of relief efforts and came to GeoAid to implement programs that Bill wanted to see done. Mind you, there was no regulatory requirement to do this at the time; Bill just knew it was good business - and the right thing to do. GeoAid has thrived over the past decade, and is now under the charge of William (Bill) Mitchell, whom joined as its Executive Director in January 2009
GeoAid is a non-profit international humanitarian organization established by Geovic, Ltd. (Geovic) to bring the benefits of mineral development directly to those most in need of life-enhancing assistance. GeoAid programs are tailored to specific locations and customs, but typically include assistance with local healthcare and educational services, community water systems, agricultural techniques and provisions and training for local micro industries. GeoAid is committed to the promotion of self-reliability and sustainable technologies, which are the underlying goals for all its programs.
The organization was created as an independent, non-profit entity through the initial funding contributions of minerals exploration and development from Geovic, and will continue to thrive through Geovic Mining Corp. (GMC) sponsorship and the generous contributions of other organizations and individuals.
Current plans for business and community development are underway through a GeoAid and Geovic Mining Corp partnership program
